c. Communicate effectively based on the context of the situation.
As part of my education to staff, I incoporate quarterly mock code skills in which nurses will simulate a code scenario. This scenario I created involved the code of a patient on ECMO. Throughout the code process, a large objective of the scenario is to examine the communication among team members running the code. Open, clear communication is key to a successfully run code and enhances positive patient outcomes. I created this scenario to give nurses a situation that presents with an unusual and stressful situation in which communication and teamwork is necessary. I also used debriefing as a communication technique at the end of the scenario to provide feedback.
This reflection examines how I utlized communication as a tool to increase student motivation and enthusiasm for learning. I discuss student clinical experiences using mutliple communication techniques to provide deomstrations, discussion, and feeback in the clinical learning scenario. Finally, it examines how this experience meets the NLN Nurse Educator Competencies.
